15 Questions with... Source EV

Two pink cartoon characters with headphones sit at a desk labeled "15 questions with..." under a stylized logo and the word "source."

Source EV is the result of a powerful partnership between two industry leaders, SSE and TotalEnergies. Together they are driving toward a cleaner, more connected future by delivering the safest, most reliable, and most accessible EV charging network in the UK and Ireland.

We sat down with them to chat all things expansion, innovation and EV charging!

You’ve recently gone through a major rebrand. What inspired the change, and what was the thinking
behind it?

Our rebrand to Source was inspired by the coming together of two industry leaders — SSE and TotalEnergies — and the opportunity to build a brand that reflects the very best of both parent companies.

We wanted a brand with the reliability, sustainability and engineering excellence you’d expect from SSE, combined with the global energy expertise, innovation and customer focus that TotalEnergies brings. Source is the point where those strengths meet — and where the customer sits firmly at the centre of the experience.

The thinking was simple: EV charging should feel easy, predictable and stress-free. Drivers shouldn’t need to think about the technology behind it; they should simply plug in, feel safe, and get on their way.

Source gives us a clear, modern identity that expresses our shared ambition to decarbonise transport, and our commitment to build the safest, most reliable, most accessible charging network in the UK and Ireland — all while keeping the customer at the heart of everything we do.

Where was the first Source EV charging site, and how many sites do you now operate?

Our very first site started life under SSE before transitioning into the Source brand as part of our joint venture with TotalEnergies. It was back in September 2022 at Castlebank in Glasgow and it laid the foundations for what is now a rapidly expanding network built on large hub formats, ultra-rapid charging as standard, and excellent customer experience. Our first hub launch as Source was at Ocean Drive in Edinburgh back in May 2025.

Today, we’re growing across the UK and Ireland with a pipeline that reflects our ambition to build one of the most reliable and accessible hub networks in the market. Our footprint expands every month as we focus on delivering critical mass in the places drivers need us most.

When building a new charging site, what does Source EV prioritise?

Every site starts with three priorities:
 1. Safety first – well-lit sites, excellent visibility, and real-time monitoring supported by AI.
 2. Reliability and uptime – robust infrastructure, continuous diagnostics, and hub-scale builds that reduce queuing and downtime.
 3. A stress-free driver experience – intuitive layouts, simple payment, ultra-rapid speeds, and locations where people actually want to stop.

We then use science and data to determine where drivers and fleets need our sites the most.

Are there particular regions or types of sites that are especially important to you?

We focus on strategic, high-demand locations where our hubs can genuinely make charging easier — including:

  • Retail and destination hubs, where drivers want to combine charging with useful dwell time.

  • Urban areas, where EV uptake is high but home charging isn’t always possible.

  • Major arterial routes, supporting long-distance travel for fleets and private drivers alike.

Our aim is simple: be where people need us by building a network that supports clean, connected communities across the UK and Ireland.

What policy changes would you like to see to accelerate ultra-rapid charging infrastructure?

A few key policy changes would unlock growth at scale. Faster grid connections remain one of the biggest bottlenecks for all charge point operators, and a more standardised, consistent national planning approach would help speed up deployment. We’d also like to see greater support for large hub developments, which are proven to reduce queuing and improve overall reliability for drivers. Finally, clearer guidance around pricing transparency would build trust and ensure customers can charge with confidence and ease.

What mix of customers do you see using your hubs in the future?

We see a vibrant mix of customers using our hubs in the future, including private EV drivers, fleets and logistics operators, taxi and PHV drivers, and long-distance travellers.

Our hub-first approach with large bay counts and ultra-rapid charging, serves all these groups by ensuring confidence, reliability, and availability at all times.

Source EV hubs are positioned as safe, reliable, and easy to use. What technologies or design choices help deliver that experience?

We design from the driver’s perspective, using technology to make charging smooth and predictable:

  • Ultra-rapid chargers with dynamic power allocation for fast, consistent charging.

  • AI-driven monitoring, giving us real-time insights on bay blocking, faults, and safety.

  • Large hub footprints, reducing queuing and ensuring availability even at peak times.

  • Clear signage, intuitive layouts, and simple payment journeys, supporting ease of use.

  • Best-in-class lighting, CCTV, and site design, reinforcing safety and peace of mind.

Reliability is such a big topic in EV charging. How does Source EV approach uptime and maintenance?

Reliability is one of our strongest future differentiators. Our approach includes:

  • Real-time monitoring of chargers, bays, and site performance.

  • Preventative maintenance driven by data, not just scheduled routines.

  • Hub-scale redundancy, more bays means less queuing and fewer outages for drivers.

  • Close collaboration with OEMs to ensure fast resolution when issues arise.

  • Future technologies will include a completely transparent network, so drivers and journey planners can view real time data to plan for availability and booking.

Fast-forward a few years — what do you hope a driver’s experience at a Source hub feels like?

Easy. Calm. Predictable.

A driver arrives knowing there will be a bay available, the charger will work, the site will feel safe, they have something meaningful to do whilst waiting the short time it takes to charge and they can get on their way quickly. Charging shouldn’t feel like a chore,  it should feel effortless.

That’s the future we’re building: stress-free EV charging, available wherever people need it, supported by advanced tech, welcoming hub design, and a network drivers trust.

Why are partnerships like Source EV and Octopus Electroverse so important?

Partnerships like this make life easier for drivers — and that’s the whole point.
By integrating networks, simplifying payments, and giving drivers more choice, we remove complexity from the charging journey.

It’s also a powerful way to accelerate EV adoption. When networks collaborate rather than compete on access, the public gets a more reliable, easier-to-navigate charging ecosystem.

What’s your dream electric vehicle?

BMX iX, excellent range, fast acceleration, and a little bit of luxury

What’s the longest journey you’ve completed in an EV - and can you share the total mileage?

I travelled 243 miles in from London to Peterborough via Southwold. It was good to know I was never far away from a Source EV charging hub on the route in case I wanted it, passing through Chelmsford, Colchester and Ipswich along the way. I took the opportunity to top up in Ipswich Euro Retail Park Source hub, every visit provides me insights that help refine and innovate for our customers.

Do you have an EV life hack to share with the EV community?

It’s a classic: planning ahead is so helpful to keep charging efficient, not just for choosing where to charge but checking out amenities and pricing as well.

What advice would you give someone looking to use a Source EV charging location for the first time?

If you’re visiting a Source EV charging location for the first time, my biggest piece of advice is to keep it simple — because the whole experience is designed to be exactly that. Just pull up, plug in and power up. Our ultra-rapid chargers guide you clearly through each step on-screen, so you can get moving again quickly and confidently.

And finally - an EV etiquette question - what would you say is the golden rule to using a public charger?

Plug, charge, and go. That way it’s available for the next arrival, if space is limited the next EV will thank you!
